Barbara Tate has many years experience performing and teaching in both the UK and Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree from the University of Queensland where she studied singing with Margaret Nickson and piano with Bernice Lehmann and during her time there she was awarded the J. Albert and Sons Prize and the Margaret Nickson Prize. After completing her degree, Barbara traveled to London where she furthered her singing studies with Ruth Packer and Brian Galloway. Whilst living in the UK, she performed as a member and soloist with Opera Integra and as a member of the chamber choir Musica Sacra. Since returning to Brisbane, Barbara has been a guest soloist with the Queensland Bach Choir and Brisbane Concert Choir and more recently has given a number of recitals in Brisbane. Recent performances have included vocal works by Margaret Sutherland, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Frank Bridge and a performance at Crossbows Festival performing Madrigals Book II by George Crumb and giving the world premier of Josephine Jin’s Eulogy .
From 2000-2009, Barbara taught principal study voice and English Language for Singers at the University of Queensland and from 2008-2012, principal study voice in the music performance degree at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) as well as running her own private teaching practice. She has taught both voice and piano in schools in Brisbane and is currently teaching voice at Stuartholme School and Mount Saint Michael’s School. She is also an experienced choral conductor and for a time ran her own opera group Operaworx. For the last 13 years, Barbara has coordinated the lunchtime concert series Con Spirito at St Andrew’s Uniting Church. Barbara is a professional member of ANATS, AVA and MTAQ.
